Robert Mugabe: What an asshole.
Sub-Saharan Africa March 23rd, 2007Well Plaid friends, this is a first attempt at a blog for me, so here goes. If you are interested in the hot news stories of the day, with a bit of inside analysis and background to make you smarter….then you have come to the right place. The Plaid Avenger strikes!
Top Plaid story of the day: Robert Mugabe is a serious asshole. Out of Harare, Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has once again promised the world that he will survive in office forever and ever, no matter what ‘the West’, the African Union, or even the people of his own country do to get rid of him. Wow. What a testament to controlled use of power and democratic principles. And all while his country is being completely flushed down the shit-pipes. Thus: he is a serious asshole.
Some background: this dude actually used to be a good guy! He led the struggle for independence of his country from colonial power over three decades ago. And they did it. He was a hero. As such, he was elected president: a post which he has now held for 27 years. And that is where the problem arises. Mugabe is the best living example of one of Africa’s most pressing problems: corruption that power brings. So many of Africa’s presidents are popularly elected, and then find the power so intoxicating that they cannot bring themselves to relinquish it when the time comes for another election. Most of the longest ruling ‘presidents’ in the world are out of Africa; many have ruled for decades, and several like Mugabe, are continuing to increase their records as every day passes. No matter how destructive their rule may be to the folks in their country. The true mark of an asshole.
So why the hullabaloo? Why is this even in the news, and why does the UK, the US and possibly the wider world even care about this country? Well, Zimbabwe was trucking along at a pretty good clip for the last couple of decades…it was even a model for positive growth in Sub-Saharan Africa for a while. Then for various reasons, Mugabe’s popularity started to slip a bit, and other political parties started more aggressively to challenge his long-standing leadership. As a counter move, about three years ago Mugabe thought of a brilliant plan to re-gain his popularity: to take land and possessions from the white minority and give them to the black majority. A genius ‘populist’ strategy. And if those whities accidentally get beaten or killed during the process, oh well! This caused widespread violence, which caused domestic turmoil, which caused an economic breakdown, which caused international investors to haul ass out of the country. It also caused international outcry which led to an international embargo and sanctions against the country. And now you know why they are poor…and getting poorer by the day.
Now the Plaid Avenger is not going to debate whether these policies were good, fair, or just ways to combat African poverty. Quite frankly I don’t know. But what I do know is that when any state leader advocates and allows–and even encourages–violence against a minority, it is never a good thing. Never. Ever. Did you hear me say never? It never works out well.
So as international criticism against this guy has grown, what has he done to prove them wrong? Well, he has continued to solidify his hold on power constitutionally. He has helped thwart and discredit all other political opposition. He has destroyed the independent press. He has jailed opposition leaders, and then they mysteriously get the shit kicked out of them while they are in jail (that was just reported on last week). Starting to get the picture here? Mugabe has become the ‘African voice that hates the West’, which routinely gets him visits from folks like Hugo Chavez et al. President Mugabe denounces ‘the West’ as trying to reestablish colonial rule, as well as blaming them for the impoverished state of his own country. And today he said: “Nothing frightens me, not even little fellows like Bush and Blair. I have seen it all, I don’t fear any suffering or a struggle of any kind.”
Great Robert! Your people are starving to death, and you are berating all world leaders who disagree with your actions. What a brave, bold voice for Africa you are! But I guess its not hard to be bold and brave when you live in a big palace and never want for hunger or security or hookers or whatever the hell else you want. Too bad most Zimbabweans don’t even have enough to eat. Must be nice to be so well off. What an asshole.
Is the Plaid Avenger suggesting that the US and the UK are totally right, and that Mugabe is totally wrong about all their disagreements? Of course not. As with everything, the truth about most issues lies somewhere between the loudest voices. But the Plaid Avenger fights for global justice, and Zimbabwe is in dire need of some. Any world leader, from any state, has to put the good of the people first. And ESPECIALLY in a state that is supposed to be democratic! People first dude! When you have 1700% inflation in your state, and people are fleeing from the country, and most people are hungry–you have to change your tune man! That shit just ain’t right. The Plaid Avenger always gets pissed when the suffering of people is accepted just so damn world leaders can save face. Or save themselves from losing their palaces and riches. Corruption of power is a blight anywhere it happens, but is accentuating more when so many folks in the country are suffering so much.
President Mugabe, why is it you are holding on to power? Is it because you truly believe you can save your country? Or is it because you truly just want to save yourself? If it is the former, then how do you foresee pulling your country out of this mess? What is your plan? If it is simply the latter: then you are an asshole.
So that’s the rant for the day. Disagree with me? Fine. Post me a message. Agree with me? Post and send a letter to your Senator too. Want to know more? Send a message.
Party on

Awesome first post Plaid Avenger!
These types of stories are perfect for this site.

Fun read, and I definitely got a good lesson about something I would probably never learn otherwise. Clear and easy to understand too.

This is excellent. I have read a couple stories this passt week about the opposition leader being beaten, then the ‘not afraid of little guys” comments, but I didn’t know the history and didn’t otherwise have a vested interest. I really enjoyed and was informed by this, and would really like to see more of these as other global stories come out. Americans (both young and old) don’t really know about the rest of the world because of the educational systems and our own self-centered view-points, so I find this stuff extremely interesting and important to know.

This is great! Blog reading is something thats easy to pick up between classes and stuff… most people bring their laptops with them to class anyway, but no one wants to carry a textbook. This is a great idea.

I read your email drunk and thought it would just be another faggy ass blog. But then I ended up reading the whole damn thing. I hope I can remember it tomorrow.

I would read this everyday even when I am no longer at tech, just cut out a tiny bit (and by tiny I mean a minuscule amount) of the personal feelings (I love the cussing; I am just talking about personal biases). It would just be good to hear a little more straight forward view of things since some of us will be bringing this to real world discussions and don’t want to make ourselves seem to have total prejudice to one verdict.

Rock on Plaid Avenger!
If it weren’t for the Plaid Avenger I wouldn’t know what’s going on in the world. Rock on and keep it real!

I liked it. I’m in your World Regions class. I’ve got much respect and honestly, I’d take one of your courses over the summer if they were more interesting. Then again, seeing what you can do with just about any news story, I’d have to reconsider. Keep this up, I’ll be reading.

Hey,
awesome class! I like that we are leaning about stuff that we never learned in grade school. I alwasys wanted to know more about Africa and Asia and they don’t cover those really besides Egypt and China in grade school. You make class really interesting and because of that it isn’t hard to remember the stuff. You rock!

Damn P.A., what a great idea! I don’t know how this world has gotten along without you thus far. This is so damn necessary - you are providing a truly great service here, to your students and humanity alike. Thanks for pouring your own personal time into this! And contrary to what some have said, I don’t see any prejudice here - just the plain, hard truth. I don’t know how much more straight forward one could possibly be. Keep callin’ it like it is, brother. You’re the greatest!

Mugabe’s a basterd for eternity! Boyer’s the man!

Awesome post. This is perfect for establishing background and history on topics we cover in class.

Great post. It was very concise and it was something that needed to be said. Also I think that this is a great tool for helping students learn outside the classroom.

please tell me your secret to your awesomeness. I’ve learned shitloads of information this semester and it’s stuff that I will take with me FOR-EV-ER. I’ve been trying to tell my friends that they need to try to get into this class every chance they get, cause it’s stuff that everyone (especially my age group) needs to know. I will definitely be reading this even when I’m not in your class anymore. PARTY ON.

P.A. should come downtown and get hammered

I really liked this method of teaching. Can you post something about the Israeli-Palestine conflict? I’m always interested in learning more about it. Thanks.
March 24th, 2007 at 3:21 pm
Yo JB, I definitely think this is an effective method you should continue to use. It compliments your sense of humor well and people are more likely to click on a link and read a quick blog than to read up on something from a boring-ass text book. Run with this idea and see where it takes you.
Cheers,
Pat

As with the awesome class textbook (which I have almost already completed because it is so damn interesting), this article was insightful and very well written. Once again, I have learned more about the world around me than I ever would have otherwise! I have already bookmarked this site and will keep checking for updates frequently. Rock on Plaid Avenger and don’t change a thing! This site kicks ass!
March 24th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
This is awesome stuff–I will definitely be reading this even after this semester is over!
March 24th, 2007 at 10:24 pm
Great idea. Really keeps up with the times. One quick question: What options do students like us have to help correct the Mugabe situation besides pointing fingers?

Boyer? On *my* internets? Holy fuck win.
Those of you who do the livejournal thing can get this blog’s updates by friending pld_avenger.

This is awesome Boyer.
And I see no personal bias in this at all, like some have suggested. Mugabe is an asshole!
I will totally read this even after I’m out of your kick ass World Regions class. You have taught me so much about the world and made learning it fun. I’ll never sell your book back for beer money either, it’s too good to get rid of. You Rock!!
March 25th, 2007 at 8:04 am
Of course, that’s the primary awesome thing about this blog, that we can get a regular infusion of the whirling vortex of relentless awesome that is Boyer even when we’re done with his class.

I think this site will do a lot of good in the form of educating students on world affairs. It’s an interactive, interesting and modern way to inform those who want to listen of the world’s often unheard problems. As far as Mugabe, he is yet another unfortunate relic of colonialism (and that’s putting it politely). He isn’t democratic, he isn’t fair and he isn’t just. However, Zimbabwe has a right to determine if he stays in power or not and I believe that by the UN and the U.S. putting economic sanctions on Zimbabwe, the West is once again meddling in foreign affairs of which it should stay out of indefinitely. One thing I’ve learned over the past year or so is that every time the West has gone into or interfered with Africa and other developing nations, it fucks things up more than they were before. That includes Neo-colonialism. Mugabe may be an asshole, but the people of Zimbabwe (and maybe the A.U.) have the sole right to decide if Mugabe stays in power. If Africans aren’t allowed to start taking care of themselves, and rely on the West’s help forever, then they will never get true democratic freedom.
